As we come out of the pandemic and society opens up again, we have noticed a change in the employment market. The biggest change relates to a shortage of candidates in Finance & Accounting, Human Resources and Office Support. Whether this is because of the #thegreatreshuffle or #thegreatresignation, many candidates find themselves with multiple job offers. So how do you choose the right one?
It’s an employee’s market. With the surge in demand for candidates job seekers are now in the unique position of getting to choose between multiple job offers.
While choosing between two job offers can be both exciting and stressful, it is important to gather as much information as possible about each role before making a decision. We recommend candidates devise a cost-benefit analysis. What does that mean? It means you need to weigh up the pros and cons of both offers, in order to arrive at an informed decision.
Weighing up the pros and cons
Guided by your comparison of the roles, ask yourself “which job will I feel most comfortable and fulfilled in?”. We have outlined the many factors to consider before arriving at this.
Work Life Balance
Take the time to consider all aspects of both roles. The one thing the pandemic has thought us is the value of Work/Life Balance. Sometimes the answer is not as obvious as a larger salary. Weigh up the difference in salary by evaluating the sacrifice that comes with it. How long will the commute be? Will you get to work from home? Will you be required to travel often?
Consider the Work Environment
We spend 40-50+ hours per week working. That’s a lot of our time spent in the work environment, and if the workplace culture isn’t the right fit for you then you may dread those hours. Company culture is so important and finding the right fit for you should be at the forefront of your decision. What are the company’s core values and beliefs? Do they align with yours? Do they offer #hybridworking options.
Evaluate the experience
Next, evaluate the job itself. What will be expected of you and what will you get out of it? Will there be an expectation to do long hours or overtime? Are there any health and wellness benefits? What does the career progression path look like? Asking these kinds of questions in the initial interview are crucial in helping you weigh up the pros and cons of each role.
Lastly, if neither role appeals to you, politely and graciously turn them down and keep searching!
